About

Led by Jesus Holguin, Environmental Justice League Tour Guide

The Port of Providence area, with neighboring Washington Park and South Providence neighborhoods, has one of the heaviest concentrations of toxic chemical storage in New England, and not coincidentally, those who live in the area suffer the highest rates of asthma. The Environmental Justice League of RI (EJLRI) leads educational "toxic tours" and "energy tours" showing participants key hazardous environmental sites in the City of Providence.  Research and mapping in Racial Environmental Impact shows that "people of color are nearly twice as likely to live in industrial zones, while two thirds of the 5.7 million children living in industrial areas are of color." (Impact Design Hub). As part of the EJLRI  tour, we will visit brownfields and toxic sites like RI Recycled Metals, Motiva Enterprises LLC (Saudi Aramco and Shell Oil), Univar, Spectra Energy, National Grid.
