For the academic year (and each summer), we seek part-time (or full-time for summer) Associates to help us advance our mission for a healthy ocean and stable climate. We focus on regional, national, and international youth engagement and leadership, especially advocacy. 

Position overview:

The Communications and Outreach Associate is responsible for helping in a variety of ways including assisting with the youth leadership initiative; global coordination of World Ocean Day; and related action and policy advocacy campaigns. The associate /intern would work in close coordination with and oversight from the 4 other professional staff working with The Ocean Project /World Ocean Day. Director is based in Providence and intern could choose to work out of the Social Enterprise Greenhouse shared work space at Davol Square and/or virtually.

Position objectives:

Help with further development of the global youth leadership initiative

o    Coordinate development and dissemination of monthly e-newsletter goes to approximately 7,000 youth leaders around the world

o    Assist in coordination of the WOD Youth Advisory Council and regularly update the organizational database

Assist with our annual growth of World Ocean Day globally 

o    Assist social media manager with content development

o    Engage with event organizers worldwide and help draft blog posts related to their events

o    Assist in finding and documenting events from around the world and register them on WorldOceanDay.org; add new organizations to the partner network map and the communications outreach database

Preferred Qualifications:

·         Alignment with the organizational mission and values including collaboration, inclusion, impact, and a respect for all people and life on our blue planet.

·         Ability to learn quickly and communicate easily, both written and oral.

·         Excellent writing skills

·         Ability to work with a wide variety of people/audiences through public outreach and related communications

·         Must be proficient (or quick learner) with computer and electronic communications, including Microsoft Outlook & Teams, Zoom, email outreach via Constant Contact and experience using or ability to quickly learn Adobe creative suite very helpful

·         Interest and skills leveraging social media for positive change (including Twitter, Instagram, FB, LinkedIn, etc)

·         Need to be team player but also a self-starter who can work quickly with the limited time provided during the summer and help achieve our conservation goals and objectives

·         Proficiency in multiple languages a bonus

Management, Support, & Training:

We provide interns with introductory training related to ocean conservation issues, effective communications, conservation policy, and other training throughout the internship related to achieving our mission. They will receive much help getting started but then also be provided with much freedom to pursue their internship’s objectives, as part of a small and mostly virtual team. As well, as part of weekly team coordination calls, the intern(s) will learn much throughout their internship. 

The intern will have a 30-minute check-in meeting or call with the Director at least once per week and join a weekly team call with our four staff and other interns. In addition to the director, the student/s will meet virtually with the Community Engagement Manager, Youth Coordinator, World Ocean Day Manager, and the Community Engagement Manager to understand each team member’s role and work with team members on various projects. We ask each intern to submit a written report as an ‘exit interview’ providing the team with constructive feedback for continual improvement, and, if interested, publish a blog post about their experience.
