Walking Tour: Pond Street - A Lost Neighborhood

Saturday, September 8th, 2018 from 10:00am to 12:30pm (ET)

About

Meet in front of Beneficent Congregational Church at the corner of Weybosset and Empire Streets .

Led by Taylor Polites, writer, storyteller, historian and former Swearer Center Practitioner in Residence .

The Pond Street neighborhood went through a process of urban renewal and displacement about 100 years ago.  The tour explores the stories of this neighborhood and how it has meaning to us today. It considers how urban renewal programs may obscured or erased historic experience and how excavating the history where physical landscape has been so altered changes the reality of that community. Polites will discuss the archive he is building that allows people to navigate artifacts through a web interface to “find stories that are meaningful to them.”  How can we allow the stories of a neighborhood to take a grassroots approach in which individuals and and organizations can reshape the ways that history is presented and told?

Students should wear comfortable shoes, bring water and come with an open mind and a welcoming heart.
