About

Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative (RIFLI) and the student-led Brown ESOL programs work together to address the marginalizing effects of language barriers by providing English language and literacy classes to adult immigrants in the Providence community. Our volunteers teach at William D'Abate Elementary School or the MET School twice a week and work with adult learners to help them meet their self-defined goals, with a focus on teaching and learning situation-based everyday English.

As an ESL instructor, you will prepare lesson plans and teach small groups of Adult English Language Learners (ELLs), enabling these speakers of other languages to effectively communicate in English. Ongoing training and supervision is provided throughout the semester. You will have the opportunity to develop your teaching skills and engage with the local Providence community. No teaching experience necessary.

Essential Duties:

1. Working with partner teachers, develop lessons and provide English instruction to adult students.

2. Provide on-going feedback to students and coordinators.

3. Analyze student progress during the semester.
