Position: Exhibitions Intern or Practicum
Reports to: Program Director & Curator
Hours: Approximately 10 hours per week during the semester. The office is open M-F, 10 am - 6 pm. Evening hours for some programs.
Location: North Main Street, Providence, RI
Start date: Immediately
Position Description:
The undergraduate or graduate-level Exhibitions Intern assists the Curator with all facets of exhibition-related work at the Center for Reconciliation. The Exhibitions Intern, depending on skills and schedule, may work on the following in close concert with the Curator:
CFR Traveling Exhibit
The CFR currently has a six-panel traveling exhibit on the history of slavery and slave trading in New England. This exhibit is set to travel to a few sites around the region. The Fellow may be responsible for the following:

Coordinating exhibition requests and correspondence

Coordinating the traveling exhibit's schedule

Ensuring that the traveling exhibition is in good repair and arranging for any necessary fixes
Visiting Exhibits
The CFR hosts visiting exhibits from other organizations in the Exhibition Hall. The Fellow may be responsible for the following:

Corresponding with the artists or sponsoring organizations.

Ensuring that all logistics related to the visiting exhibits are in place

Coordinating the visiting exhibition schedule

Participating in site visits with artists

Assisting with the installation of new exhibits

Searching for new exhibitions that may be installed in the Exhibition Hall
Curation of Long-term CFR Exhibit
The CFR is currently developing a long-term exhibit on the history of slavery and slave trading in New England that will be on view in the Exhibition Hall. The Intern would assist the Curator with the following:

Researching and drafting the exhibit script

Locating images, objects, and permissions

Proposing design ideas
-
Drafting RFP's for contractors
Essential skills and qualities:
The Intern must be comfortable taking initiative, managing and executing projects, and enjoy working collaboratively but independently within a small team of staff and volunteers. Candidates must be able to manage multiple projects.
The Intern must also be detail-oriented, flexible, and professional with strong communication and problem-solving skills. Successful candidates will have excellent organizational and time-management as well as good writing and editing skills.
Candidates must be comfortable with and/or interested in having thoughtful and sensitive discussions about race, history, identity and challenging topics. The Intern will have opportunities to participate in trainings and attend presentations related to dialogue facilitation, the history, and legacy of slavery and slave trading, the construction of racial ideologies in the United States, community building and interpretation.
A basic facility with technology and/or willingness to learn new technical skills (graphic design software, Trello, Google Cal and Google Drive, Wordpress, Canva, etc.) is necessary. A basic facility with and/or willingness to learn basic office skills (scanning/photocopying, etc.) is also necessary.
