OLEEP (Outdoor Leadership and Environmental Education) Student Group

About

OLEEP, the Outdoor Leadership, and Environmental Education Program is a partnership between the Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center (the Met) and Brown University's Swearer Center for Public Service. We work with high school students to develop leadership skills and environmental science and justice knowledge, with a specific emphasis on building a supportive, collaborative community where Brown and Met students can learn and grow together. We believe, with the right support, everyone can be a leader, and bringing about an environmentally just world depends on it.

Our small group of college mentors plans and facilitates weekly Wednesday workshops at the Met's Providence campus. These workshops focus on the integration of environmental science and justice and aim to make them creative, engaging, and relevant to Rhode Island. We also plan several field trips to nearby outdoor areas, and we focus on creating strong mentoring relationships between college mentors and high school mentees. We specifically partner with the Met because of their non-traditional approach to learning: that is, each Met student works closely with an advisor and their families to create an individualized learning plan tailored to their interests and learning styles.
