Family Service of RI is one of the state's most respected and trusted family service organizations, impacting the lives of more than 20,000 people each year through high impact partnerships and high quality innovative programs.
The Walking School Bus program is one of FSRI's signature programs. Modeled after the National Center for Safe Routes to School, children in Kindergarten through fifth grade who live within a mile of their elementary school are supervised by Walking School Bus Leaders who insure they arrive to school safely and, most importantly, on time.
Walking School Bus Leaders must be able to walk at least 1.5 miles. The time commitment is minimal (no more than an hour); the schedule is flexible (you walk the day or days of the week you want); the impact, tremendous. Leaders should be reliable, punctual and enjoy working with children. At least two Leaders work together on any route. Training is provided. A background check is required.
