Event Description

Justice Talks @ Brown will be an unique three-session discussion and reflection series hosted by the Swearer Center.  Justice Talks is a national movement that engages its participants, most of whom are engaged in community work, in discussion and reflection.  At the state level AmeriCorps members serving in communities across Rhode Island participate in a statewide series, every year.   The discussion series provides participants an opportunity to reflect on their chosen form of civic/community engagement, in a specific form of reflection that uses texts and multimedia as a common grounding point.  8-12 person groups will generate discussions about service, social justice, and collective action. Each session is typically oriented around a theme and one or two brief but provocative readings and/or media.  Themes to be included in the Swearer Center series are:  Identity and Community, Citizenship and Democracy, and Exclusion and Belonging.  The Swearer Center will offer two groups, one to be led in English only, and one to be led in a bilingual format (English and Spanish). The groups will be facilitated by Swearer Center staff.  All three sessions will meet from 6:30-8:30 PM (March 8thApril 5th and April 26th).  Participants will be required to attend all of the sessions in order to participate.
