I cannot believe today was our last day of chess club. We've had a tremendous semester of all sorts of new activities - competing in the interscholastic league, traveling to other schools to play, competing on the weekend, graduating our first group of 5th graders who started with us when they were in 2nd grade, and more.

I feel that it is such a privilege for me to have the opportunity to coach the D'Abate chess team. It's amazing to me every week how much the students learn and retain and how they are growing into formidable chess players. Dilania does a great job supporting our team and our own work in the classroom. I appreciate the work she does to engage our families in supporting the chess program.

Today our team played students from home schools. Many of our students had questions about what was a home school and we reflected on how different children have different school settings. They had some strong players but we held our own. Principal Kermen came to visit during the match and he seemed proud that we were hosting a team!

Today our fledgling team played against Central Falls. I was proud of our students' drive to win but it is frustrating to me when I know they can play better than they actually do. It was really nice for D'Abate to be the host school and I felt that our program was the real deal.
