Today, I had two meetings: one being about a possible survey for alumni Teaching Artists and another about the state of CityArts' social media platforms. The first meeting gave me insight into seeing what the program and AmeriCorps staff wants to see in the survey and collect data about. I'm hoping to get it accomplished in the next couple months for the alumni TAs and look at creating an end-of-term survey for these current TAs and future ones. Then, I worked on inputting the survey data for the in-school surveys for the rest of the day.

In the morning, we had a staff meeting where we discussed social media and the professional development workshops for AmeriCorps members. Afterwards, I spent the better part of my day entering the data from the in-school surveys. I'm beginning to get a sense of what students are getting out of their program and what we can do to possibly improve other aspects.

A success I had this week is getting close to reaching the 300 goal we had for the surveys, especially in the schools. My challenge would be getting to see the students who missed taking the survey the first time, but it was also a success to get some of them to come and take it. Some of the surveys had comments from the kids raving about their Teaching Artist, which is really encouraging to see. One student wrote, “My Teaching Artist is nice, kind, and beautiful. She’ always there to help me and she’s outgoing.” I’m glad to indirectly see some of the impact the teachers have on the students. Next week’s goal will be inputting the data, most of my week was spent getting a system ready to enter them and how that should be done, so I couldn’t accomplish last week’s goal of getting some data in this week. However, I’m excited to start visually seeing where our students’ mindsets are at!

I was able to get more surveys back and we are closer to the 300 mark that we want to be at; we just need 37 more to reach our goal. During today, I created a new spreadsheet that has some things I learned from the PASA meeting regarding numbering questions but still upholding a personalized sense that’s attributed to CityArts. The last part of the day, I worked with students that had not taken the survey yet.

I had lunch with a fellow VISTA member who works with PASA. She downloaded me on what their survey data is like, so I can get an idea about how I should be able to organize our data. Theirs seems to be focused on coding their numbers, so it is easy to read. I think I may just go back to utilizing an Excel sheet, but I’m not sure the coding aspect would be helpful. I spent the rest of the day creating an Excel sheet for potential data input tomorrow.

Since I had a short day, I spent most of my time organizing forms for data input in the next couple days. I’m utilizing Google Forms to, hopefully, be a resource for both students and us to conduct the surveys and organize the data.

I spent the first half of the day focusing on organizing the surveys in order to get them ready for data entry. I’m still figuring out what is the best method to inputting this data. I had a lot of emails to catch up on, so I began replying to those, especially from Teaching Artists who had questions regarding ClassDojo and student surveys. The last half of my day was spent at Opening Day for all AmeriCorps members as we heard local politicians talk about the importance of the program and other members state why they serve.

A success that I had during the week is completing most of the surveys and getting the chance to interact with some of the kids. The challenge I think for the week is figuring out the best strategy for the surveys being conducted and them inputting them for results. I'm not sure what the best solution is at the moment, which is what my goal will be for next week. I want to find out how CityArts can efficiently complete these surveys and collect their data.

I spent the first half of the day going over the survey results and seeing who’s left to fill out surveys. I reached out to the AmeriCorps members about turning their surveys in that they took into their school classrooms, so we can utilize them for AmeriCorps reporting. Also, Nancy brought up information about another organization’s survey results of teaching fellows. I read over that research to see if it was possible for CityArts to do a similar type of evaluation for their Teaching Artists.

Today, I finished getting the surveys ready to conduct them later on. I conducted surveys in three separate classes, and they seemed to go pretty well. I brought back the data to my desk for inputting them in the future. I did have a bit of anxiety going into the surveys, but, after getting started, it was fine. We also had a staff meeting where we discussed topics that needed to be updated. I went over ClassDojo protocol, student surveys, and potential involvement in a AIDS Care Ocean State festival.
