(My work with PDS for this week was centered around the Kenton County Minecraft project, in which I worked to recreate my home county in the PC game of Minecraft using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This project, when complete, will serve as a tool for involving our youth in the building and design process for the cities of the county. Moreover, it is a way to show the fundamental role PDS has in building community.)

This week I edited the roads to make them more realistic and also tested them for accuracy. On top of that, I worked extensively on designing the lobby--creating signs and buildings--and on laying the foundations for the towncenters. I took a break from my work with Minecraft to help a coworker in conducting data acquisition of a construction site using PDS's drone. At this point in the project, much of the work was straightforward, but of course there is always a bit of trial and error inherent in building in Minecraft. In particular, it was a challenge getting some measurements.

This week I finalized my plans for the direction of the project. I decided that instead of trying to have every building in Kenton County represented in Minecraft I would recreate the buildings for one iconic area of each city and use those areas as towncenters for players to spawn into. Each towncenter will lead into the rest of the surrounding city, where players will be free to build what they choose to help bring to life their vision of the future of the county. With this plan, I realized that there must then be a way to connect all of the cities together, as I had exported each model city as its own Minecraft map. This is where the utility of the lobby comes into play, allowing portals to each of the towncenters to be localized within one small area.

I finally finished the Kenton County road networks and moved on to looking into creating and testing building schematics for the county. I did a bit of remodeling for one of the more iconic buildings in Covington. Also, I worked on some of the coding for a few plugins and did some remodeling for the Minecraft lobby world. I ran into the issue of not being able to use software to bring in the buildings as accurately as I wanted to and later opted for a different strategy.

After catching up a bit more with coworkers, I continued creating a precise representation of the roads of Kenton County in Minecraft (MC). Still, the most challenging part of this was overcoming the tediousness of tracing in the hundreds of miles of roads in the county. In addition to this task, I looked into how I was to recreate, or pull in data for, all of the buildings in the county. I found out that this wasn't going to be very easy.
