Met with professionals from Perspectives and other tutors to discuss self-determination and how we can foster that in our relationships with our learners. Next time, we will meet in small groups to discuss our experiences with our learners and how we can continue to promote self-determination.
I met with my learner for our first tutoring session. We discussed her interests, and she is very passionate about learning Braille this semester. I am a little concerned about this because have minimal knowledge about Braille and this will require procuring materials like Braille paper, but I am excited to tackle the subject with my learner. She already has some experience with the Braille alphabet. Since we didn't have many resources for studying Braille at our disposal on Monday, we spent a little bit of time talking about the history of Braille and the rest of the meeting getting to know each other.
Learned about HIPAA, misconduct, and reporting in training. Met other tutors and learned how first meeting will be conducted.
Participated in Swearer Center Community Corps training. Learned about the privilege of being a Brown student in Providence and how to set and enforce appropriate boundaries with the people I am serving.
