It was a beautiful day outside so we let the kids run around for a little bit in the courtyard. Perfect way to get their energy out! We had expected it to be cold, so we had planned an arctic-themed day...oh well, still fun! We made paper cup snowmen/penguins, and brought in marshmallows and pretzels to build (and eat!) marshmallow men. Huge success, and using the privilege of getting marshmallows at the end of the day also helped to keep the kids well-behaved....they'd never want to jeopardize their marshmallows! :)

Today I helped the kids make origami fish and painted paper-plate fish bowls--such a hit! The kids were so well-behaved and LOVED the activity. Awesome day at D'Abate. :)
Today was Valentine's Day, so our snack time consisted mostly of the kids eating their candy. It made them slightly hyper, but as was expected when candy is introduced to the scene. We talked about the universe, planets, and the solar system, and the kids decorated paper plates to look like their own, new planet. Tommy had found these build-your-own solar system sets, so we also gave each kid a foam planet from the set to create and decorate. The set also came with sticks, so each kid was able to put their planet on a stick and bring it home with them. It was a huge hit!
Today was my first day at William D'Abate Elementary School. I met my students for the first time today (3rd graders!) and just loved every minute of it. The kids were so enthusiastic, and though we did occasionally have to refocus their attention, they behaved well and were interested in meeting me and my fellow mentors. Our activity was to create acrostic poems with the kids, and one of the girls in the class drew us on her poem, wrote about how cool we were, and gave it to us at the end of the day. Sweetest thing ever. :)
