Providence Public Library - Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative

This class was productive. First we listened to "Someone Like You" and they had to fill in blanks in song lyrics we printed out, and then we went over some words and metaphors from the songs they were unfamiliar with. We popcorn read an article about Lin-Manuel Miranda and Puerto Rico. After reading it, we went over unfamiliar words and pronunciation. We also read back each sentence to them after they read to hear pronunciation. This was useful because they learned some new words and were able to practice and correct pronunciation.

This class, my co teacher wasn't there, so I taught the class myself. It was a lot of fun and felt very productive. We went over a reading activity on Halloween, and they learned new vocab and worked on pronunciation. We also worked on a fill in the blank exercise with irregular past-tense verbs. I asked for feedback at the end, and they all said they found these activities very productive and useful.

This day was fun. The learners seemed to me more comfortable speak than they were in the previous class. They made family tree and talked about their histories which was really cool.

This day was a nice transition into the class. New learners kept coming in throughout the class so we had to do introductions a few times. We mostly focused on icebreakers to get the learners comfortable speaking. There was definitely a few people who were more comfortable speaking than others but I tried to get those who were less comfortable to engage at least some.
